Technical Theatre
Internship
For the past
six years, Midland Community Theatre’s professional staff
has worked with interns in construction, rigging, welding, painting,
properties, design, lighting and sound. Most interns are recent
college graduates looking to expand their professional experience
and develop new skills. Interns work in all areas, rotating their
time between the Scenic Designer, Technical Director and Lighting
and Sound Designer. Interns are also given the opportunity to expand
their portfolio be designing an element of a show or stage managing
a production.
Midland Community
Theatre is one of the ten largest community theatres in the United
States, producing fifteen productions per year in three performance
spaces. Each year, Midland Community Theatre produces musicals,
comedies, dramas, mysteries, melodramas and children’s theatre.
In the Cole Theatre, we operate a 515 seat proscenium arch theatre
(Davis Theatre One) and a 155 seat Black Box theatre (Mabee Theatre
Two). We have a fully equipped scenic shop on site where we build,
paint and construct all scenery and props. In addition to the Cole
Theatre, we also own the Yucca Theatre in downtown Midland. This
1930s movie house was converted by our volunteers for our summer
fundraiser – Summer Mummers – and is also used throughout
the year for rentals and other productions and event. These three
diverse spaces create different design challenges and opportunities
to learn more about technical theatre.
Our program
begins in the fall – interns have started as early as the
first week of August to as late as mid-September depending upon
your summer employment. The program continues through the spring
– interns can depart as soon as the final mainstage production
opens (usually early June) or stay on through July 1st. Interns
are paid a weekly stipend, and most past interns have broken even
for the year. Midland Community Theatre will assist the intern in
finding housing, and most years the interns share an apartment to
save expenses. Our volunteer auxiliary has received donations of
furniture that can be used in this apartment.
